Does the new drug trial a ray of hope
Malignant tumours and neoplasms are used synonymously with cancer. Usually, cancer is recognized as the rapid creation of abnormal cells. The growth is beyond the usual limits; thus, it invades other parts of the body and eventually spreads to other organs. This process is termed metastasis. An escalation in this process results in cancer.

The most common causes of cancer death in 2020 were:

• Lung cancer had caused 1.80 million deaths

While the medical fraternity continues to struggle to find a cure for cancer, a new ray of hope recently surfaced when drug trials were successful on 12 patients. Let’s unfold the details of the same.
The news surfaced on June 8, when a drug clinical trial on cancer patients was successful. Amongst the 12 patients on whom the trials were conducted, one was of Indian origin.

The trials were performed at the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Centre in New York using dostarlimab. The trials found that rectal cancer had disappeared under immunotherapy. After completing the dosage for the drugs, the patients were cancer-free, and patients had been cancer-free for up to 2 years. What’s more miraculous was that patients didn’t need the standard treatments of surgery or chemotherapy or radiation.

In addition to the cure of cancer, the patients didn’t have any side effects as we have in the case of chemotherapy or radiation treatment.

The clinical trials
The objective of this trial was to study a drug named TSR-042. It is also alternatively referred to as dostarlimab. After the treatment with this medicine, the research followed standard chemoradiotherapy and surgery. This effectively treats advanced deficient Mismatch Repair (dMMR) solid tumours.

The trials included 12 patients who had rectal cancer. After undergoing the medication for six months, the patients had completely healed. To confirm the results, the patients underwent several tests like :

• Physical examination
• PET scan
• Bioscopy
• MRI scan
• Endoscopy

When all the results showed that none of the patients had any sign of a tumour, abnormal cell growth, or severe side effects, the reports confirmed that we might finally have a cure for cancer.

What significance does it have for us?
While the study has been done on rectal cancer patients, hopefully, we should also have a cure for other forms of cancer. This is a big revolution in medical history.
