Types of Blood Cancer

There are three main types of blood cancer namely Leukemia, Lymphoma and Myeloma

  1. Leukemia

Leukemia originates in the blood and bone marrow. It occurs when too many white cells are produced which interferes with the bone marrow’s ability to create red blood cells and platelets.

  1. Lymphoma:

Hodgkin Lymphoma- It develops from the cells called lymphocytes in the lymphatic system. It is characterized by the presence of an abnormal lymphocyte called the Reed- Sternberg cell.

Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma- It also develops from the cells called lymphocytes in the lymphatic system. It is a type of white cell that helps the body fight infections.

  1. Myeloma:

It is a type of cancer of the plasma cells in bone marrow. It spreads in the bone marrow and damages your bones, and also crowds out healthy blood cells. They create some antibodies that cannot fight infections. As it is found in many parts of bone marrow it is often called multiple myeloma.

Treatment for Blood Cancer

Treatment for blood cancer depends on your age, how fast it grows, type of cancer, where it is spread and many other factors. Some of the common treatments for blood cancer includes:

  • Stem Cells Transplantation

It infuses healthy blood forming cells into the body. Stem cells can be collected from circulating blood, bone marrow and umbilical cord blood.

  • Chemotherapy

It uses anticancer drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells in the body. This treatment can be given before stem cell transplantation.

  • Radiation Therapy

It can be given before stem cell transplantation. It may be used to destroy cancer cells or to reduce the pain or discomfort.
